Congratulations, you have started you new job. Starting a new job is very exciting or nerve racking depending on how you approach the new routine, and you will now be thinking about ways to settle in making sure you feel comfortable in the role. With that on your mind, here is a guide to being able to settle into your new job!
Continue to be consistent.
It is incredibly important that once you start out well in your new position, you continue to be consistently well and perform up to the standards needed for the role and the responsibilities that come with it. It is ok to sometimes have bad days as well all have some of them but if you are seen to be unreliable and do not meet realistic expectations agreed with you and the employer, then you won’t be going very far in your role! Consistency is key and with it comes good results that helps others wanting to work with you to meet the goals and objectives of the business.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Every day in a job, there is always something new that pops up that you don’t have much experience about or don’t know about that makes you think of the best way to handle it. If you are unsure or need more information, never be able to ask the right questions to the relevant people. You are not expected to be perfect just from minute one and know everything straight away, you will learn new things on the job so don’t be hesitant to ask anybody for any information!
Develop rapport.
In your role, you are highly likely to be contributing and doing tasks with members of staff as well as some by yourself. With teamwork comes teambuilding and the opportunity to build rapport with other staff and employees at the company. You don’t have to be best of friends with everyone, but you should at least develop a good professional relationship with them and contribute fully to any team tasks that you are assigned to so that you and the team can perform tasks effectively and to high standards.
Take initiative and responsibility.
If you complete tasks early or find areas where you can contribute, don't hesitate to take initiative and help out others, where it is needed, if you think you can be the person that can helps find the right solution. Do remember to communicate and collaborate with your team though before you try and get involved though, they may not need your help but asking them will be seen by others as someone who is confident about getting involved and being happy to contribute when needed.
Gather feedback.
Having self-esteem is mainly a healthy thinking of your own capabilities and your confidence in your performance in the role you are in, you are though, not the final judge in how you are rated or doing in the job. It’s the people that have set the tasks or you are report to that knows how well you are doing in the role. When you settle in, just ask your boss or leader how they think you are doing and gather feedback of your performance so far. There may be constructive criticism on areas where you could improve and it may disappoint you hearing that but remember the leader is saying these things to help you, not harm you, so use the feedback you get to motivate yourself and push the performance boundaries based on what is achievable.
In conclusion, it can be easy or scary starting a new job and making a good first impression but settling into a job requires a new set of skills and mindset to stay settled. As long as you are consistently good in what you are doing, being unable to ask the questions that is needed, continue to develop key rapports with other members of staff, contribute and take responsibility when needed and making sure you are getting the necessary feedback you need to continue to do better. You will be able to develop into the role well and settle into your new daily routine with much confidence!
